Trees and Blogging

I’ve spent the 25 days since my previous update in thought. No, I haven’t been sitting here every night contemplating the meaning of life, but I have been thinking about an old riddle; If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound?

What is my point? I have had this blog going on 8 months, not even a full year and yet I find myself less than motivated to keep it updated. My version of the riddle as it applies to me: If a blogger writes for the web and nobody comments on it, who is that person writing for?

I know that sometimes my topics of choice may not be in everyones area of interest, but my hope is that someone will find something that resonates with themselves in the words that I write or the things that I link to that I find interesting. My greatest hope is that whomever is interested by the things I share, shares their knowledge and experiences with me.

And we all know that trees blog for themselves.

You blog for you. I’ve had this debate with myself over and over, for over 5 years. Why do I do ZSN? Why do I put hours into something that people might not even look at? Because I have fun doing it. I’m going to do it regardless of whether or not any one is reading it. I do it for me. Sure, you need to keep your audience in mind when writing, but don’t write for them, write because you enjoy it. Also, as i have come to slowly accept, only, like 10% of your readers leave comments. Ever. And it’s the same 10% over and over.

Basically, what he said. Blogs are so numerous that I barely read any of them more than once per week, unless it’s a close friend or something similar. Just do it because you want to / like writing. Whatever works for you. Or don’t do it, for the same reasons.

Great question: should one blog for him/herself or for the audience? I’ve dealt with this same issue and my topics for writing have evolved as have my goals of the site. I started off with personal posts describing school and family. Today I’m usually writing about work related subjects as I feel it might help land a full-time job if the potential employer can see that I have an understanding and interest in what I do. Everyone has a different reason to blog. Personally, I think the best bet is to pick something your passionate about and devote your blog to that. Maybe add a car category in your case and post some of your concept sketches or something like that.

Just because someone doesn’t leave you a comment doesn’t mean they’re not reading your blog :)
