On burnout and American culture

New York Magazine has an interesting article about burnout up today. I suggest that you all go have a read. Pull up a comfy chair cause its a lengthy article at 7 pages. I read the whole thing and I must say that I can relate and understand. One of the most interesting things in the whole pice, for myself anyway, is that young people are more likely to suffer from burnout than older people. To summarize a little for a lot of you lazy readers out there, burnout is not a simple case of being exhausted. Rather, the ratio of gratification to perceived work input is what mostly accounts for the sensation of burnout.

Honestly, it is my feeling that Americans have it all wrong. The people interviewed in the article are confused as to why they are not happy even though they have tons of money. As far as I can tell, that appears to be the American ideal.

As long as you are attractive and thin as well…

The best thing to do is think of something you enjoy that you absolutely cannot do wrong. As Travis put it: …burnout is not a simple case of being exhausted. Rather, the ratio of gratification to perceived work input is what mostly accounts for the sensation of burnout. [...]
