On Keeping Focused and Staying Motivated

I have noticed as of late that my ability to be motivated to do what I like and stay focused on whatever I am doing has been a little off. Now I am not talking explicitly about work as it is not such a problem there with deadlines and a boss to keep you on task. No, I am talking about self-motivation and the ability to keep my self on task. Part of the problem that I am having may have to do with wanting to do too much and not having time to do it in. What I really need to do is to prioritize what I want to do and make sure that I stick to the list. First of all, I have not gone to the gym since nearly the middle of summer and I should really start getting back into it for the snowboarding season. Second, I also have design work that I have to do outside of work. Next, I have my own pet projects like my server that I want to build, music library that needs to be tagged, other computers that need to be maintained or updated. Finally on my list of priorities, my pathetic excuse for a social life. Well, its good I got that written down. Now if I can only manage to stick to it that would be great.

PS: If you were hoping for inspiring words or uplifting phrases, I’m sorry I let you down.

Finally? No no no, social life > any plans for your future, your professional life, or family. This is basic stuff.

In all seriousness though, just drop what’s not important. You’re not supposed to spend your entire life planning for it. If people get pissed at your in that aspect for doing so, then send ‘em my way. I have textbooks I don’t read that I can beat them with.

Man, do I know all about this problem. 15 things to do at once, all of which I want to do at the same time. I can’t figure out what to do, so I just don’t do anything. Personally, I found just escaping it all helped. I’d play videogames for a while, lose a whole day, then the next day I’d feel out what i think I’d want to do best. Sometimes I’d lose a few days to goofing off, but I’d get a lot done when I wanted to, rather than forcing myself to work.
    Indeedy.
